Preflop Omaha hi/low Raising
Some less experienced players play too passively. They feebly ease their way to see the outcome of the flop before making a move. failure to apply any pressure before the flop can cost them dearly as players with mid range deceptive hands get the opportunity to see a cheap flop. Like in a holdem game, it is essential that you push out a few dead preflop hands to maximize your chances. With so many variables in Omaha Hi/low, it is a good idea to attack the game pre-flop when you have a premium starting hand.
By pushing preflop, you will :
1) Reduce the field and competing hands
2) Increase the pot size
3) Put pressure on shortstacks
Like in holdem games, especially at the lower stakes, you may be up against a field of calling stations. In that kind of scenario, you should avoid raising. Just go with the flow and wait to see the flop before you make your move, you will still have a decent pot and if you land a poor flop, you can easily fold without too much investment.
Field can be reduced when you are up against a tight table, or as in a tournament situation, the blinds are high enough to put players in trouble should they decide to stay in the game. In these situations, raises are fairly effective if you are the first player to enter the pot. As you are being selective with your hands, your table image might be perceived as tight. This will make other players think twice about entering a hand with you.
You want to reduce the field when you hold a hand like A-A-2-K, the theory being that like in holdem, you have the premium top pair, you also have a good chance of scooping the pot with the low hand. AA hands at Omaha8 are not as strong in a multi pot situation, there are too many variables. If you can reduce the field to a heads three way or heads up situation.
Avoid raising in situations when you are holding a hand such as A-2-3-4, even when the ace produces flush opportunities. The reason being, you are generally only chasing the nut low hand. The more people in the pot, the better, and if it is a high flop, you can easily pull out of the hand.
Remember, the objective of the game is to make players pay for playing statistically weaker hands preflop and sneak into the pot when you are on a marginal hand.
