Pot Odds & Table Position
How has your pot odds altered?
Pot odds are worked out by taking into consideration the pot size, the proportion of the bet to stay in the game. You must also consider future bets, which again will alter the pot odds, and weigh it up against your hand.
Example Hand :
Hole Cards - A-2-5-8 rainbow
Flop - A-4-8 two suited
In the example above, you need a 3 to complete the nut low hand. Someone may already be holding the nut low. You also have to take on board that if the board produces the flush card, you could be on on a hiding to nothing.
The hand above is not a great hand in a multiway pot but can increase in considerable value when you are up against one or two players.
Always consider the pot odds to determine the value of calling. Take a deeper look at the variables.
Table Position
Understanding table position is all about taking in the information around you. Most of the information is gathered via the betting that has gone on before you.
If you are in mid position, and the player before you throws out a bet, you need to be aware that you could be stuck in the middle of a betting war. You could simply call the one bet but a raise behind you could result on the betting being capped.
If you are sitting at a fairly loose table, holding a drawing hand, often the best course of action would be to fold. Otherwise it could either end up being an expensive call or you will be folding another wasted bet.
On a tight table, you may well be right to call for the one bet. This is where player notes come into action. If you have notes on the players behind you and they have a history of pushing the betting, fold your hand. If they have a history of flat calling, go ahead and call.
