Playing the Opposition

You can have the exact same cards but the nature of the game means that you often have to take a different approach to your play.

As I stated previously, many strong players will fold moderate hands preflop when they are sitting in the early positions. When they enter the hand, take note.

You need to ask yourself if you think you have the best preflop hand. Holding A-2 is often good, but if another 3 players enter the hand before you with a mix of A-2 or A-3, the chances are, you will be fighting your way for a share of the low pot. This is where many people faultier. They find themselves chasing a share of the low pot.

With multi players in the pot, there is a good chance someone will flop the nuts high, and keep raising, only for the other four players to keep calling with the nut low hand. The player with the high hand collects half the pot, whereas the other four players get a quarter share of the low pot. Hands like these can make or break your game so you need to avoid slipping into this pot committed error.

Styles of players can give you an indication of what you are up against. If you are in against a loose table and the players before you limp in, they are probably playing with four high cards or possibly a pair, holding low cards with a moderate chance of winning the low hand. In these situations, you should probably raise.

If you are playing against a tight table, then they will probably have entered with strong preflop hands. In this situation, it is probably best just to call, see how the flop lands. Use the flop and the betting information to assess your next course of action.

The later your playing position, the more information you will have on the game. You can then use this information to decide how to approach the game in accordance with the style of players you are facing.

From an early position, you can play strongly against tight players and passively against loose players. This allows you to push a few strong players out before the pot. If they stay in, you have a good indication that they are holding premium cards.

Easing your way in against loose players will naturally build up the pot preflop. They will either call or raise, and when you land, they will have no idea how strong your hand is then you can set a trap.

Playing Omaha Hi/Lo can be frustrating. No matter how good a preflop hand you have, you are left to the mercy of the flop. It is a great game to play due to the many variables within a hand. In saying this, the skill factor has a high part to play when assessing your preflop play.

By habit, most players seem to have an eye mainly on the low hand. They are concentrating on the most competitive share of the pot. The likelihood is that this pot will be shared. By keeping your focus on the high pot while keeping involved in the low pot, you can gain a lot of ground on the opposition.
