Omaha8 Re-Raising
Other than the AA hands, you may consider re-raising with hands when you want to reduce the players in the pot, or simply to increase the pot size should you hit your hand on the flop.
Players are generally cagey about entering a pot when there has been multiple raises beforehand. To enter the pot, they will generally have premium preflop hands. As Omaha High Low can change so dramatically after the flop, even the loose players may be deterred from entering in a multi raise situation. They previous big blind callers may also be put off, if there is 2 or 3 raises behind them.
Often players will call with optimistic hands in the hope of seeing a cheap flop. The raising battle often weeds these players out of the pot. If you feel your hand is best played with one or two players in the pot, then you should strike into re-raise mode. You may also deter some of the tighter players behind you entering the hand with an equally strong preflop hand.
Like all forms of poker, the observant players are the better players. In a tournament situation, where the blinds are having a big effect on whether players will enter the hand, you need to ask yourself :
1) Can I push players out of the pot.
2) Am I forcing a player to call my raise.
You may be able to push most players out of the pot but be wary of the large stack. On many occasions I have called with rags hoping to land my high hand. Players often push for low, so if they do not land on the flop, they can be easily chased out of the hand with a post flop raise. Being the large stack, I can afford to take the chance. I will play this way when I know I can push them into an all in position by the river.
You also have to be wary of the shortstack. You are unlikely to push them out of the hand when they are on the blinds and close to elimination, but you can often push them out of the hand if they do not have to pay into the pot, unless they are sitting on a premium preflop hand.
Keep a close eye on the payout positions. If the tournament is progressing close to the payout, the average stacks will be more reluctant to enter a raised hand incase they are dragged into the bubble battle.
Most players on the blind will call one raise with anything if there are several players in the pot. The one raise call will offer them good pot odds against multiple players. More than one raise before the blinds will make them think twice about entering the hand. You have taken the pot odds away from calling with their average hand.
Note : You will also develop a table image of being an aggressive player. In future hands many players will back away from entering with optimistic hands with the worry that you will be raising behind them, offering them no opportunity of seeing a cheap flop.
