Omaha Hi/Lo Blinds Play

When you are playing from the blinds, you are last to play.

The drawback is that the small and big blinds are the only positions who automatically pay into the pot (Unless an anti is added from each player which sometimes happens at the later stages of a tournament to stimulate the flow of the game.)

The upside to playing in the blinds is that you have access to more information. You will know how many players have entered the pot. You will know how many bets you need to match to see the flop.

If 5 players have called your big blind, you make another unit raise, the chances are that everyone will stay in to see the flop, so effectively you have doubled the pot size.

If the early players call and you get a couple of raises behind them, raising on the re-raising on the blinds will probably reduce the size of the field.

If you are sitting on the small blind and everyone has folded before you, sometimes a raise with a weaker hand will push out the big blind for a steal. If not, you have a heads-up situation where you have a chance of bullying the big blind.

The small blind is usually half the size of the big blind. In this case, you should drop hand such as 9-9-9-4, etc. Save your chips for a better hand. This helps your tighter table image, and when you do decide to bully the big blind with a raise, they will be more inclined to fold.

To call the half bet from the small blind, you can afford to call with relatively weak hands as you are getting decent enough pot odds by leaving it to the mercy of the flop. The more players in the pot, the better. Although, if the big blind has a habit of raising, don't be afraid to fold.

If you are in a heads up situation with the big blind, you should raise raise with a moderate to strong hand, call with the weaker hand but generally fold poor hands such as 9-9-9-4 as illustrated above.

All the situations are based on statistical averages of winning and improving your play. Poker is a game of observation. The more you learn about the players style around you, the more you can adapt these strategies to suit the situation. If you are in a tournament situation, always keep a close eye on the player stacks as this can affect the decision making process of your opponents. In poker, it is often more of a case of playing the player more than playing the cards.
