Low hand in Omaha8

Omaha High/Low is a split pot game. Half of the pot goes to the high hand and the other half goes to the low hand. The high hand is determined using the same hand rankings as standard Texas Holdem. As the game is often referred to as Omaha8, this indicates that the number 8 comes into play. To determine the low hand players must have 5 cards of different values, eight or less, the Ace is considered low but can also be used as the high card for the high hand.

The best possible low hand is A-2-3-4-5

Note : To make a low hand

Paired cards do not count.
Fushes and straights do not count.
Cards above eight do not count.
Aces can be use both as high and low.

Sometimes there is no player who has a low hand consisting of the required 5 cards. In this case the player with the high hand will collect the entire pot.

It is vital that you realize that you must use exactly two of the four hole cards you receive. Novice players often forget this rule. Also as you are making two hands, a high and a low, then you need to know that you can use the same hole cards for both hands, or if you chose, you can use two for your high hand and the other two for your low hand. As long as you use exactly two cards to make your hand, you can use any combination for either hand.

To determine the ranking of the low hand you need to work from the highest card down to the lowest.

7-6-4-3-2 is better than 8-4-3-2-A, because the highest card in the hand, 7 is lower than the 8 from the other hand.

8-5-4-3-2 is better than 8-6-3-2-A, because both have a high card of 8 but the first hand has a 5 as the second highest whereas the 2nd hand has a 6 as the 2nd highest. As 5 is lower than 6, the first hand wins the pot.

If more than one player shares the same low hand, they share the low half of the pot.

All the hand combinations can be difficult for the newer player. By practicing online you will quickly sharpen up on your hand reading skills. Playing online at a site like FullTiltPoker.com is great, you can play several more hands than you normally would playing at the live tables, it speeds up the learning curves and your hand analysis capacity
