Additional Outs in Omaha8
Often the hand you are playing for doesn't materialize. Omaha8 has many twists and turns. There are so many stumbling blocks, more so than in Texas Holdem due to the fact that you have twice as many cards to chose from and two hands to play for.
To minimize the effects of missing your hand you should try to develop a hand will as many possible outs as possible. Try to look at your hand with a view to "What if so and so comes out, how will this alter the outlook of my hand?"
The more possible out you have, the more likely you will win the hand. Be selective with your choice of hands. Try to always ensure that you have a secondary hand to fall back on, just incase a bad card comes out to scupper the hand to are hoping to land. This means you have to remain very selective with hands you commit to playing. By generally playing good starting hands, you will offer yourself more opportunities to win from a redirected hand.
If you are playing good starting hands, you will be leaving the door open to win both the high and the low hands. The flop can produce some disappointments and turn some superb starting hands into throw away's.
Good starting hands, are hands such as A-2-5-J (A-J Hearts).
Now with a high flop, you have the opportunity for the nut straight, or even the nut flush.
Lets say the flop comes out K-Q-3 (K-Q Hearts)
Now you have your possible nut straight, possible nut flush. You are a prime candidate for the nut low.
You are on a classic drawing hand. Currently you have nothing, but have a whole heap of outs. In a multiway pot, you should try to keep all the players involved. Any raise from you would likely reduce the field. This would reduce your hands drawing value. If there has been an early raise, followed by a call around the table, you are last to play, a raise by you will probably keep most in the pot. It will increase the size of the pot and increase your drawing value. You are playing for the nuts, and should you land, you might make a few extra bets on those players staying in with second best hands.
Now the 2 Hearts comes out on the turn. This has given you the nut high flush but weakened your low hand opportunity by pairing off your 2. This is a situation where you should raise. You are unlikely to hold out for the low, should another low come out on the river. You are likely to lose the low pot so you should make others pay to stay in the pot.
What if you land the 10 Hearts? This will give you the nut high, a royal flush. There is no possible low hand. This is one of the very few instances when you have tied up the scoop before the river. Your aim is to get the most money into the center of the pot. Your choice of play will be determined by the other players around you. The board is looking very dangerous. Its a very thin line between extracting the most from the pot and chasing others out.
